VHS To DVD - 4 Tips For Making Great Vacation Videos

Here's a post on making better home videos from 8mm to DVD to everything in between. Read my four great pointers to make your exciting vacation into an exciting vacation home video.

1. Wherever you go for your vacation, try to get videos and photos that help you identify the location. Something that looks interesting and gives information is the goal. These can be road signs, billboards, picturesque landscapes, brochures, area maps, etc. You can edit these photos and video into the rest of the home video as "bookends" (on either side of the your video footage of your family and vacation activities.)

2. Be sure to get a little bit of footage of every family member. It is always easy to focus on the kids and totally ignore Mom and Dad. With modern digital editing, though, you can add photos of yourself and your spouse from the trip in case you did not get enough video footage. It is sometimes easier to get a few still photos than a whole video clip.

3. You really must try to shoot a few "candid" video clips. This is the kind of footage that can go a long way and really be the shots everyone in the family remembers most. There are a couple of ways that you can do this. First, try to hold the camera in your hands for a while to let the family get used to it being around and, hopefully, they will start acting more naturally. If that doesn’t work, try turning the camera on, set the lens to a wide angle (not too wide), and then place the camera in a stationary position or hold it at your side so no one knows you are taping.

4. Something I love to do is get the kids at their best. I always look for a really classic moment and try to tape it. Kids really do say some of the darnedest things. Sometimes the banter between my two boys is so hilarious I can’t hold the camera steady. Best of all, when they are totally absorbed in their playing together, they aren’t really trying to impress me. They are completely unaware of me and totally natural. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.

Well, that’s just a few of my secrets that you can use on your next vacation home video. For more information on working with home videos, just click on the following link to go to my website about VHS to DVD transfer and other related topics.
